Ofcom are Commencing Enforcing the Online Safety Act, effective from March 2025 in the UK

The UK’s Online Safety Act, effective from March 2025, mandates that online platforms conduct thorough risk assessments to identify and mitigate illegal content, including terrorism, hate crimes, and child exploitation. Ofcom, the regulatory body, has set a deadline of March 31 for certain large services as well as small but risky sites to submit these assessments, emphasizing that non-compliance could lead to enforcement actions.

We’ve identified a number of online services that may present particular risks of harm to UK users from illegal content – including large platforms as well as smaller sites – and are requiring them to provide their illegal harms risk assessment to us this month. We’re ready to take swift action against any provider who fails to comply.”

–       Suzanne Cater, Enforcement Director at Ofcom

For platforms seeking to navigate these stringent requirements efficiently, Streamshield.ai offers a comprehensive solution. As a cutting-edge Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Streamshield.ai leverages advanced machine learning to automate content moderation across various digital formats—video, audio, images, and text. This automation ensures that platforms can proactively identify and manage harmful content, aligning with Ofcom‘s regulatory expectations.

Integrating Streamshield.ai, platforms can streamline their compliance processes, reduce the risk of regulatory penalties, and contribute to a safer online environment for all users.

Regardless of size or location, all services in scope of the Online Safety Act must carry out a proper illegal harms risk assessment – a vital first step in protecting their users and making their platforms safer by design.
